Atlantic City August Numbers

Although both Las Vegas and Atlantic City are struggling financially these days, new numbers released this week show that Atlantic City has the biggest mountain to overcome.

In August, what should be one of the busiest months of the year, almost all of Atlantic City’s casinos posted a loss. Overall, Atlantic City casinos posted $347.5 million earnings for August, which represents an 11.3 percent decline from August 2009.

There were no clear winners but some casinos fared better than others. The casino that lost the least was Caesars Atlantic City, which showed a decline of 5.7 percent. Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City was down 6 percent and Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort was down 8 percent.

But other casinos fared worse. Resorts Atlantic City was down 21.2 percent in August, while the Trump Plaza Hotel Casino was down 14 percent. Other significant losses include the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa at 11.7 percent decline and Trump Plaza Hotel Casino which posted a 14 percent decline.

New Jersey lawmakers are considering a number of changes which are geared toward improving the area’s bottom line. Some of these improvements include allowing slot machines at horse racing tracks and possibly legalizing online gambling.
