Council members are not necessarily opposed to the fact that online poker was legalized. Rather, they are concerned with the manner in which the bill was passed. Many of the council members claim they didn’t know what they were voting for when they passed the bill.
Council member Jack Evans told reporters that he is filing a motion to repeal the bill. A majority of council members stand behind the repeal bill. Evans stated that the council was not given an adequate opportunity to consider the program before it was made law.
Major supporters of the bill include David Catania and Muriel Bowser. The support from Evans, Catania and Bowser is likely to outweigh the influence of panel members that support the original bill signed last year. Michael Brown and Marion Barry are the only key opponents to the repeal bill.
Evans said that the best course was to start over with a new bill. Since the bill was passed last year outside the normal legislative processes, a new approach would be necessary. However, he has no intention of introducing a new bill at this time.
Mayor Vincent Gray agrees with Evans’s statement that repeal would be the best course. Gray’s spokesperson said that there is no consensus at all as to whether online gambling should be legalized and how to go about doing so. The mayor’s position seems to be the same as Evans: taking a step back and passing a bill more carefully.
At least six of the 12 council members support appeal. Chairman Kwayne Brown declined to comment on the bill, but stated on other occasions that he doesn’t support any form of gambling.

Many proponents of online casinos were elated over Congress’s new interpretation of the Wire Fraud Act and how it related to online poker. However, not everyone is as optimistic about it. Native Americans may be the biggest opponents to online gambling.

Ernst Stevens is the Chairman of the National Indian Gaming Association. Stevens outlined a number of concerns on how online gambling will affect Native American tribes. He also outlined several solutions to ensure that Native Americans are not harmed by new regulations.

First and foremost, Stevens argues that Native American tribes should not be subject to taxation. He also proposed that they be allowed to operate online gaming sites in any jurisdiction and be protected under existing laws under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

Poker Player Alliance Chairman Alfonse D’Amato has made it clear that the PPA supports Native American rights. D’Amato proposed a number of solutions that would be in the best interest of all groups. Additionally, he mentioned that online poker was not the biggest threat to Native American casinos. D’Amato said that existing forms of gambling such at state lotteries may be a bigger concern for tribal casinos.

Despite these developments, Darold Stagner, Executive Director of the Native American Fair Commerce Coalition, has argued that they are not enough. Stagner mentioned that the bill takes away some of the regulatory rights away from the National Indian Gaming Commission. Also, the aspect of the bill exempting Native Americans from income taxes is unnecessary, because tribes are already exempt from federal income taxes.

U.S. Digital is a California based company, but sees a potentially strong market in the state of Hawaii. As she speaks with lawmakers in Honolulu, Riahei is determined to convince them of the benefits of legalizing online poker.

Although regulating the industry in Hawaii would create a great market for U.S. Digital and other gaming companies, Riahei is centering her selling points on the benefits to the state itself. She has pointed out that legalizing online poker could bring in substantial tax revenues to the state. These revenues could be used to fund essential services for the state.

Riahei completed a power point presentation to lawmakers. This presentation showed that by the end of the first year, the state would retain $2.5 million in profits from legalizing online poker. After five years, the state would be accumulating nearly $80 million in revenue.

Riahei is telling lawmakers about the different proposals of other states across the country. She is discussing the reasons other states are considering regulating online poker and why Hawaii should consider doing the same.

However, lawmakers in Hawaii share the concerns of many of their colleagues in other states. Many are concerned that legalizing online poker would create a number of potential problems for the state. Many bills have been proposed to legalize other forms of gambling in recent years, but they have failed to make their way through the state house.

Sen. Kim has supported idea to place video and slot machines in the state. However, even Kim has concerns over allowing gambling to take place across the Internet.

The state of Hawaii faces a number of financial problems. However, lawmakers haven’t budged on their position not to support gambling. As the 2012 kicks off, industry leaders are looking to Ayre for telling moves on where the industry is headed. The rest of the world already knows that the announcement by the DOJ is going to have profound changes on the industry. However, Ayre is not as optimistic as many others in the industry about what those changes are.

Players, gaming executives, affiliate marketers and advocates have been expecting that the change in the DOJ’s interpretation of the Federal Wire Act means that online poker will almost certainly be legalized in the U.S. shortly. However, Ayre doesn’t believe the legalization of online poker will happen within the next year. In fact, he believes that there is less than a 50% chance that there will be another state will follow Nevada in establishing intrastate gambling.

According to Ayre’s predictions, the legalization of online poker will take place over the next ten years. Many companies are ready to start investing in the US Gambling Market, but Ayre believes they will be sorely disappointed with the outcome.

Due to his pessimism over the prospects of legalizing online poker in the United States in the coming year, Ayre is looking for new opportunities. Rather than celebrating the new position of the Department of Justice, Ayre is going to be looking towards Asia as a new market for online gambling.

Ayre said that the markets in Asia are larger than all the rest of the world combined. He even went so far as to say that no one can call themself an industry player if they don’t have their hand in the Asian markets. Ayre also feels that the next biggest market will be the Latin America. He said that not many gambling firms have a presence in Latin America, so that will be one of the areas that have the most potential.

While Ayre’s position is inconsistent with that of most of the rest of the industry, his reputation carries a lot of weight. Many industry leaders may change their perception of the direction the online poker industry is headed after listening to his opinion.

The court case arose from a 2010 decision to shut down a poker hall known as the Poker Palace. The Poker Palace was run by Charles Daniels, a respected businessman in Portsmouth. Daniels donated money to a number of organizations such as the March of Dimes and a number of educational establishments.

After running his business for four years, Daniels had to shut it down on orders of Earle Mobley, an attorney with the city of Portsmouth. Mobley didn’t agree with the state’s gaming laws and allowed Daniels to operate the Poker Palace from 2006 to 2010 without interference. However, Mobley decided he had to take action in 2010 over concerns that the Poker Palace might be encouraging Portsmouth to become a major gambling center.

Greg Raymer, an online poker champions in the 2004 World Series of Poker decided to testify before the courts. Like many other advocates of both online and offline poker, Raymer said that poker was a game of skill not a game of chance. However, Raymer decided to take his case a step further and show that to the court.

Raymer’s demonstration lasted 15 minutes, which he was able to prove that skill plays a much larger role in poker than other forms of gambling. However, the judge eventually ruled against Daniels.

Daniels is considering taking the case to a higher court. According to an interview he conducted, he has not decided whether or not he should appeal.

The case has finally gone to court as John Campos has stood by the movement to protect online poker. Campos is the former director of SunFirst Bank. Campos has been charged, alongside Chad Ellie, the founder of a payment processing firm. Campos and Elie are under indictment after refusing to cooperate with Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney overseeing the case.

Campos and Elie’s refusal to cooperate has provoked the DOJ to indict Full Tilt Poker and Poker Stars. So far, 11 people have been indicted.

There are a few challenges that Bharara and the other prosecutors on the case will have to contend with. Most importantly, they will need to convince a federal judge that online poker is not actually a form of online gambling. Prosecutors are claiming that advocates of online poker are incorrect in their assertion that the game is based on skill rather than chance.

While these issues are still being sorted out, prosecutors have introduced a few new facts to the case. They are ready to show that the founders of PokerStars pursued Elie on allegations that he stole several million dollars from a payment processing account. Elie reportedly gave some of the money back, but some remains unaccounted for. Elie’s charges may make it more difficult for the defense to make its case.

The government has also mentioned a few other issues related to Elie’s involvement in the case. However, it may be difficult for them to find a clear statute or precedent to show that those particular actions were in violation of any law in the United States.

Despite the attack on his credibility, Elie is willing to argue that the nine key elements of the Illegal Gambling Business Act do not have anything to do with online gambling. Prosecutors disagree with their analysis, arguing that they are neglecting to take into account the similarities between online poker and other activities such as sports betting.

Prosecutors are clearly giving the online poker firms a sampling of the arguments they are going to make when they go to trial.

These mining sites provide an advantage to those players who are professionals and those who are serious amateurs and hence players who want to indulge in online gambling for recreation are unable to do so.

Casual players make more re-deposits than other players and hence online poker sites want them to have the advantage. Depositing players are more important to the online poker industry and hence this is a good move on the part of Bodog. The joint venture with MBM and Boyd may be just what Bwin.party needs to get back into the market. Together, the three companies expect to generate many customers. The joint venture is expected to be highly profitable.

However, Ryan anticipates regulators are going to be highly scrutinized by regulators at the state and federal level, even though Bwin.party has abided by Congress’s mandate to stop providing services in the United States in the past. Ryan is proud that Bwin.party followed the law, even as other companies thumbed their nose at it and flourished.

MGM Resorts’ CEO Jim Murren said that laws will need to be much stricter if poker is legalized in the United States. A few bad apples like Full Tilt Poker have blemished the reputation of the entire industry. Regulations will need to be tougher for consumers and politicians to feel comfortable with online poker firms operating in the United States.

MGM, Boyd and bwin.party are working hard to legalize online poker at the federal level. They are willing to work closely together on this new venture. Also, MGM and Boyd intend to use bwin.party’s software to operate their own casinos as well.

The schedule includes 20 hours of original programming; the bulk of the programming will be shown on the Velocity Network but seven of the program hours will be on CBS Television Network.

Epic Poker League play will begin showing on Oct. 7 at 10 p.m. ET on the Velocity Network. The first CBS telecast will air at 1 p.m. ET on Oct. 8.

Velocity is a new network that is owned by Discovery Communications. It replaces the HD Theater cable network and is described as an upscale network targeting men. It will share coverage with CBS; all coverage will originate from the Palms Casino Resort, where all Epic Poker League games are played.

“Epic Poker offers an innovative take on America’s favorite card game and our telecasts put an entirely new spotlight on many of the world’s finest players,” said Jeffrey Pollack, executive chair of the EPL.

Each episode featuring Epic Poker League play will be hosted by Emmy award-winning sports anchor Pat O’Brien; he will be joined by poker personality Ali Nejad, who will offer expert analysis.

Fair Play USA describes its mission as being dedicated to lobbying those in power in Washington to understand the benefits of legalized and regulated online poker. The group currently consists of consumer protection experts, poker players, law enforcement officials and others who have come together to lobby for legal online poker.

Freeh’s addition to the lineup gives the group a bit more credence in the eyes of some.

“Current federal laws fail to provide U.S. law enforcement vital tools to address illegal internet gambling, enabling a ‘wild west’ atmosphere,” Freeh said in a statement this week. “I am joining Fair Play USA to improve this environment by clarifying these laws, better empowering law enforcement agencies to crack down on violators and using licensing and regulation to ensure safe and legal online poker.”

The primary backers of Fair Play USA are Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International.
