New Jersey lawmakers anticipate voting on an online poker bill authored by Raymond Lesniak. The bill is expected to go to vote in the Senate on May 31. Lesniak originally stated that online poker would be legalized in New Jersey by the beginning of September. However, that timeframe was built on the assumption that lawmakers would be voting on the bill sometime in April.
Although the bill will come to a vote later than expected, Lesniak said that he is confident the bill will eventually go through. If the bill moves forward according to his projections, New Jersey could see online gaming sometime before December.
Lesniak said that there is still overwhelming support for online poker in New Jersey. He argues that the delay in the legislature was due to many lawmakers going on a brief sabbatical this month. The last thing Lesniak wants to do is push the measure to a vote without all the democrat senators around. He said that the bill was well received in both the House and the Senate. More importantly, it may not face the same demise as the previous bill when it goes to Christie’s desk.
Lesniak has worked hard to make sure that the bill was tailored properly. However, he doesn’t want to leave any room for error. Democratic senators tend be more likely to support online gaming bills. Therefore, Lesniak and his colleagues decided that it would be prudent to hold a vote when all senators were back for a vote.
Although online gaming legislation has made a lot of progress over the past year, Gov. Christie is still a wildcard that Lesniak will need to contend with. Christie has warmed up a little to the idea of legalizing online poker. However, he is still a little hesitant to move forward with a bill without ensuring it satisfies all federal and sta

Although the climate towards online gaming is shifting in the United States, many groups are still against any bill that would legalize online gaming in the United States. They have vocalized their opposition to all things related to online gaming from the very beginning. However, their voices have grown much louder over the past few months.
Many online gaming supporters are becoming irritated with the uneasiness coming from their opponents. However, they may have reason to be optimistic. Is it possible that their opponents are starting to resign themselves to the possibility that online gaming is going to be legalized in the United States?
A new post in the Kansas City Star alludes to the possibility. Robert Reich or Tribune Media Services, stated that he is particularly concerned that the government is reversing its position on online poker. Reich has raised a number of concerns unrelated to online gaming, such as the crowdsurfing opportunities raised by Obama’s Jumpstart Our Online Businesses Act. However, he is willing to go on the record saying that he is wary of any legislation that would legalize online gaming in the United States.
The arguments opposing online gaming have not changed much, but they are brought up more frequently. The opposition believes that it is ironic and dangerous that state governments are using taxpayer dollars to market online gaming to their citizens. Many citizens have lost their jobs since 2008, in what many say was due to what was probably the most dangerous example of high stakes gambling.
However, those supporting online gaming continue to insist that it will bring in additional revenue to the states. They will be able to use this revenue to create new schools and other projects to help their citizens.
Regardless of what direction he would like online gaming to go in the coming months, Reich acknowledges that his position may be in vain. The likelihood that online gaming will be legalized is clearly growing. He even concluded his article with the sentence: “Step by step we’re turning America into a giant casino.” Those words could have a powerful impact on members on either side of the fence.
However, Reich did bring up one of the points raised by many supporters of online gaming: how does the government plan to keep problem gamblers from losing money on the site? This is one of the challenges that Washington wants to address in any bill that moves through the legislature.
Gov. Herbert of Utah hasn’t made it a secret that he is against legalizing online poker. He signed an anti-gambling bill last month, which gives Utah the option to opt out of any federal legislation that would legalize online poker. However, Herbert isn’t just against regulating online poker in Utah.
Herbert has stated that he is against any bill that would legalize online poker in the United States. This past week he has reached out to congressional leaders in Washington. He hopes that he will be able to keep them from passing any law that would regulate any form of online poker at the federal level.
Herbert sent letters to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker John Boehner. He acknowledges that the Justice Department’s new position on the Wire Act grants individual states the right to decide whether or not to legalize online gaming within their borders. His letter asks that the Congress respect the right of states to set their own direction for online gaming.
Although Herbert is clearly against Congress forcing the hands of state legislators by passing an online gaming bill, many contenders are likely to argue that his position is moot. The bill Herbert and the Utah House signed proves that individual states can choose to opt out of any federal regulation.
Herbert and other opponents to online gaming may be concerned about confining gambling addictions to individual states. An article written in the Kansas City Star earlier this week also stated that America is slowly being turned into a nation of gamblers.
However, members on both sides are starting to feel that the chances of online gaming passing in Washington are growing steadily.

The Poker Players Alliance has been spending months doing everything it possibly could to legalize online poker in the United States. Although they concede that Black Friday was a setback for the poker industry, they are optimistic that they can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
The PPA has been working even harder since the Justice Department changed its position on the legality of online poker. The lobbying group wants to remind the poker community that April 15 will be the one year anniversary of the day the Justice Department seized the domains of Full Tilt, Pokerstars and Absolute Poker.
While Black Friday was a roadblock for the movement to legalize online poker, the PPA said it had its share of positives as well. Black Friday helped players, industry members and politicians band together for a common cause: regulating online poker.
As the one year anniversary of Black Friday approaches, the PPA is launching a new campaign that will help spread the awareness they need to get an online poker bill passed through Washington. Some of the strategies they are using in their campaign include:
Facilitating communication between concerned citizens and Congress.
Providing Black Friday logos for bloggers and site owners to display to draw attention to the cause.
Accepting donations to help make the cause a success. They are calling this donation program the “Never Fold Money Bomb.”
The PPA is also looking for new members. They are convinced that regulation has a better chance of making it through Washington if they have more people rallying behind them.
The PPA website states that it is time to “tell Congress that the poker players enthusiasts of this great nation will never fold in the fight for the right to play America’s favorite card game.”
